However, the 36-year-old Swiss had to fight hard to defeat his Croatian opponent Marin Cilic in 5 sets of 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 3-6 and 6-1. Federer had won 8 of his 9 games against Cilic before the Melbourne final.
The Swiss scored a second consecutive title at the Australian Open, his sixth career. Meanwhile, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski won the mixed doubles final with Croatia’s Mate Pavic.
The tandem overcame Indian Rohan Bopanna and Hungary’s Timea Babos.

Cilic had a triumph in a major tournament at the 2014 US Open after easily defeating Federer in the semifinals. In the final match, he defeated Japanese Kei Nishikori in three identical sets of 6-3.
Federer however defeated Cilic in the Wimbledon 2017 final in three sets. Cilic had been bored by foot blisters.
