During the past few weeks, many leaks have been posted on the Internet concerning the Redmi Note 5. We have relayed some of them at the end of January in our columns. The questions were simple. Would it be identical to the Redmi 5 Plus, already officialized by Xiaomi two months ago? Or would it be different, with a new technical platform? And it is clear that the rumors did not agree with each other.
Two smartphones, the Note 5 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro
Given the proximity of its formalization, we made the decision to wait for the press conference held today, Wednesday, February 14, in India. Now that the information is official, what is it exactly? The rumors were right. Those which indicated that the Redmi Note 5 would be a Redmi 5 Plus. And those that the Redmi Note 5 would be different. How? Because the firm has unveiled two terminals and not one. The first is the Redmi Note 5, an international version of the Redmi 5 Plus. And the second is called Note 5 Pro.
We will not return to the Redmi Note 5, since the smartphone is strictly identical, with a simple change in the frequency bands compatible with the Chinese version. So focus on the Redmi Note 5 Pro, a novelty whose positioning is higher than the Redmi Note 5/5 Plus, the qualifier “Pro” requires. This is confirmed just as much with the platform as the photographic equipment, and even the design.
The first mobile with Snapdragon 636
The Redmi Note 5 Pro has a Snapdragon 636 and no longer a Snapdragon 625. This is the first time that mid-range mid-range Qualcomm finds its way into a smartphone. Recall that the Cortex-A53 SD625 are replaced here by Kryo 260 (the economical version of the second generation of Kryo). The Adreno 506 gives way to the Adreno 509. And the modem goes from a Snapdragon X9 to a Snapdragon X12. On the memory side, the basic configuration of the Redmi Note 5 Pro is identical to the best version of the Redmi Note 5. Added to this is a premium configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
The photo is the other point of improvement between the Redmi Note 5 and its declination Pro. At the rear, the simple 12-megapixel sensor is replaced by a dual 12 + 5-megapixel sensor. The main sensor is associated with a lens opening to f / 2.2 and phase detection autofocus. The secondary sensor has optics opening at f / 2.0. The set is supported by a dual tone flash. At the front, the 5-megapixel webcam is replaced by a 20-megapixel webcam with LED flash and lens opening at f / 2.0 and a fixed focal length.

For the rest, no change: IPS Full HD + screen of 5.99 inches, 4000 mAh battery with fast charging, fingerprint reader, full connectivity (Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi n, FM radio, GPS with Glonass and Beidou, jack 3.5 mm, micro USB 2.0). The set is stored in a fully aluminum shell (the Redmi Note 5 is equipped with polycarbonate ends). The colors range from classic black to blue, including gold and golden rose.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with MIUI 9.0 (on an Android 7.0 Nougat basis). The price of the smartphone is 14000 rupees (165 euros) for the version 4 + 64 GB (corresponding to RAM and storage) and 17000 rupees (215 euros) for the version 6 + 64 GB. The launch date’ has not been confirmed. But given the growing number of Xiaomi phones at some French distributors, it would not be surprising to see him land in a few months in France.
