A powerful earthquake rocked Mexico City Friday night, without causing major damage, five months after a violent earthquake that killed 369 people in the capital.
“The city is functioning normally, the damage is very minor,” said the mayor of the mega-city of 20 million inhabitants, Miguel Angel Mancera, in the early evening on local TV.
“So far, there are no casualties or injuries,” said spokesman for the presidency, Eduardo Sanchez.
The magnitude of the quake, which occurred at 17:39 local time (23:39 GMT), was evaluated at 7.0 by the Mexican Seismological Service and 7.5 at the USGS Geophysical Institute, which then revised it to 7 2.
According to the USGS, the epicentre of the earthquake was located northeast in Don Luis, Oaxaca State, about 600 kilometres south of Mexico City.
Images circulating on social networks showed several damaged houses in this locality without any human loss being reported at the moment.
According to the Sky Alert network, the earthquake was felt in the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Puebla. But there, too, no damage has been reported.
The depth of the epicentre, 37 km according to the USGC, could explain why this violent shake finally had little consequences.
Thousands of people hurried out of buildings in the capital when the alarm system triggered an impending jolt, to reach squares or avenues and try to avoid the possible fall of buildings.
The capital has a warning system to warn the population a few moments before an earthquake. This device works thanks to a hundred sensors placed along the Pacific coast, where the risk of an earthquake is greatest.
It can take a minute to seismic waves to reach the capital, several hundred kilometres away, but the damage can be considerable because the mega city is built on the very loose soil of an old lake.
“We ran out, that’s the only thing we can do,” said Vall Vallidolid, a 38-year-old resident of the Roma neighborhood, with red-rimmed eyes.
“It is true that we already enough disturbed. At the slightest alarm that sounds, we cry, we are very stressed, we live a flash back, “he said.
Standing in the middle of an avenue in the same neighbourhood, Graciela Escalante, 72, kept her eyes fixed on her fifth-floor apartment.
“It was horribly loud. We had a hard time getting down, it was the longest stairs in the world, but we managed to get out before the earth began to shake … we thought everything would collapse once again. ” she said, holding firmly the hand of her daughter. ooopsi “earthquake rocked Mexico”
The patients of a hospital of the capital were also evacuated on the sidewalk, found a journalist of the media.
The tremor comes five months after a series of two earthquakes that killed several hundred people in central and southern Mexico, and traumatised part of the population.
On 7 September, an earthquake of magnitude 8.2 – the most powerful in a century in Mexico – hit the country and left 96 dead, mainly in the state of Oaxaca.
Then on September 19, the 32nd anniversary of the huge earthquake of 1985 that killed 10,000 people, a shock of magnitude 7.1 had made 369 deaths in Mexico City.
Located at the junction of five tectonic plates, Mexico is one of the countries in the world where the seismic activity is the strongest.
